This 2-hour course meets the awareness level requirements of Chapters 16, 17 and 22 of NFPA 1006. This figure was significantly higher than the national average of 2.3. The state also had an unusually high average death rate from apartment fires, with 18 people per 1,000 fires compared to the national average of 6.1 deaths. Although firefighters have managed to keep the average number of injuries low, the fatality rate remains quite worrying. If you want to try to help fire heroes in the state, the following guide on how to become a firefighter in West Virginia would be helpful. In addition to the above requirements, it is recommended that future West Virginia firefighters earn a bachelor`s degree in fire science or a related field.
A good place to start would be a 2-year associate degree or a 4-year bachelor`s degree. While this isn`t usually a requirement, it can help your app stand out from your competitors. And since competition for limited places is fierce, it`s best that you invest time and effort to strengthen your application. The 120-hour Fire Fighter 1 class meets NFPA 1001, 2019 edition. The class includes NFPA 1001 2019 FF 1, HazMat Awareness/Operations and First Aid/CPR. A combined Firefighter 1 and Firefighter 2 class is available. IFSAC tests are available. The 34-hour “Rescue Core Prerequisites” course meets the requirements of NFPA 1006 Ch.5, 2013 Edition and contains information on the level of awareness for all technical rescue disciplines.
This class is a prerequisite for NFPA 1006 technical rescue courses, including rope, confined spaces, trenches, vehicles and machinery, and water rescue. The course text is Jones & Bartlett “Rescue Core Prerequisites” (WV Custom Cover Fundamentals of Technical Rescue Book with rope addition). Lessons for each individual class may vary depending on class size, teacher-student ratio, and student knowledge. There are no prerequisites for this class.
